Pike Fold have become BDGA league champions for the first time, winning by just half a point from Walmersley Golf Club.
Needing just 1 point from the 8 singles matches on the night away at Walmersley, things seemed to be getting desperate when the first seven matches were all lost with Mike O'Brien coming nearest to the elusive point before losing on the last.
Step forward Mark Forster the most successful player for the club over the past few seasons, knowing that nothing short of a win would be good enough to clinch the title for the first time.
With his match all square going up 16, Mark's tee shot found the trees on the left but a remarkable recovery shot saw him hit the green, proving to be enough to go 1 up.
Playing the 17th in almost total darkness the Walmersley player's second shot found the green side bunker with Mark finding the front of the green. With the Walmersley player unable to escape from a tricky lie in the bunker, Mark was given the hole to close out a 2 & 1 victory and earn the title for Pike Fold.
The fact that after 112 individual matches over the course of the season, Pike Fold won the title by just half a point shows just how competitive and tough this league is to win.
Credit has to be given to all 14 players who represented the club over the course of the season and it's the tremendous team spirit that has kept the team in contention throughout the season.

Dear Members
I feel both proud and privileged to represent Pike Fold as Captain in 2010 and look forward to the year ahead working with council and staff in the ongoing development of our club.
It will be my aim, with your help, to continue to raise our profile as one of the best 18 hole golf courses in the Greater Manchester area and with this in mind would ask you to support your council and officers in the difficult roles they undertake on your behalf.
We have a reputation for being one of the most informal and friendliest clubs in the area, this I think adds greatly to our appeal in these modern times, but should not be seen to undermine the traditional values associated with our sport, such as good manners, respect for each other and our course together with the R & A rules, etiquette and code of golf.
As you will all no doubt appreciate 2009 has been a tough year for many people with the economic down turn, job loses and the like, and Pike Fold and its membership have been no exception, we too have had a tough time, as have many other golf clubs and the prediction for 2010 is another tough year. With your help we will ride out the economic storm and build on the achievements made so far, so please make use of our facilities, play loads of golf and come and have a pint or two afterwards.
Both the Lady Captain and I have selected Bury Hospice as our nominated charity and hope you will support and assist us in raising funds for this praise worthy and much needed facility.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you well for 2010 and look forward to seeing you both on and off the course.

Pike Fold are turning many of the region's clubs green with envy.
And if Ross Fisher had been putting on the verdant, slick surfaces at the Unsworth course he might well have taken fewer strokes he used during the US Open at Bethpage Black!
Course manager Philip Harmon and his staff have overseen the transformation of the greens from the ordinary to the extraordinary over the past few months.
"We have just scarified some on the front nine but the members know that the work has to be done and in the long run it's in all their interests so they don't complain," he said.
Harmon has left alone the expansive greens on the inward half which opened little more than a year ago to stretch the course to a full 18 holes at the centenary club that moved from the lowlands of Blackley in 1999 to the undulating fells near Bury with views to die for.
And they are arguably some of the best in the North West, despite their newness, thanks to them being laid to USGA specification.
Opinion
Club captain John O'Donnell enthused: "We're extremely proud of the greens. I've visited a lot of courses this year and ours come up to the standard of every one I've played. That includes Hesketh, Royal Birkdale and Romiley who have nothing better than what we have here.
"But I have a biased opinion although we had an invitation day recently when we received a lot of praise, as we generally do from visiting parties. And we can play on them all year unless there's a heavy frost."
O'Donnell agreed that greens at most clubs will be in top condition at this time of the year but he rated Pike Fold's right up there with the best.
Harmon, 33, worked in the States and Germany before returning to Crompton and Royton then taking the Pike Fold job three years ago.
"The greens may be all-weather but maintaining them is not an easy job. They need a lot more feed and water than you'd expect. We aerated the new ones at an early stage, which not many people do, but we have adopted a programme to keep them as healthy as we can.
"We don't have any weeds because we keep on top of them. The structure of the front and back nine greens are different but we've managed to get them to play the same pace."
They will be put to the full test during a festival week starting in July 27 when Lancashire play Yorkshire in a Roses mixed age match.
And that's an appropriate and deserved fixture for the child friendly club that has more than 40 juniors including 14-year-old Holly Vizard who was crowned youngest winner of the Bury Women's Championship at the town's club last week.
